The Complaint:
I went to the MID's customer service manager Jack Crieg to try and work out
a payment arrangement for my bill because I had been shut off with out
warning and I use an oxygen compressor because I am disabled with a lung
disease. I am on a very fixed income through SSA and my roommates who are
my brother and sister in law had been unexpectedly laid off so there was no
income. Jack Crieg agreed to turn me back on and make payment arrangements
for the outrageous security deposit fee of $450.00 and the reconnect fee of
$77.00 if I paid $300.00. Needless to say I did not have the $300.00 at the
time and the Salvation Army Utility *censored* is virtually impossible to
get through to, and the only other *censored* was the CVOC who are not
accepting new applicants. I didn't know what to do because time was running
out and I was threatened with getting shut off again. So an aquaintence of
mine said she would help me out with the $300.00. She paid through a credit
card on line to the Western Union. I went into the office and met with Mr.
Crieg on the 15th and made a payment schedual. On the 17th I recieved an
orange notice on my door stating that I had to have 1,322.05 by the 21st or
I was again going to be shut off. I called Mr. Crieg and asked him what
this was all about and he said the bank had returned the $300.00 made by my
friend through western union. I was distraught and overwhelmed by this
information because I didn't have $13.00 let alone $1,322.05 and he was
fully aware of this and said that there were no options and it was all or
nothing. At the time my brother's extended unemployment benefits paperwork
was still in transit and I did not know when they would arrive so I
couldn't give a specific date as to when I would have $300.00 to replace
the money my friends bank had returned. On the 21st like clockwork the
power was shut off. by then my brother's unemployment benefits were to be
on there way in the mail and be here by the 24th. I called Mr. Criegs
office and left a message pleding with him to accept the $300.00 I was now
able to pay to replace the previously returned money and continue with the
previously agreed upon payment arrangement. I was called back by his
secretary Wanda and told in no uncertain terms was there going to be any
chance for me to try and correct the mistake that I had no control over in
the first place and that since the other $300.00 had been returned by the
bank the payment arrangement was now null and void. It is either $1,322.05
or no power which means I have no oxygen and can not do my breathing
treatments which I have to have 4-5 times a day. This is going to send me
to the hospital which in the long run is going to cost way more than
1322.05 not to mention cost me any little bit of health I have left.
